Chanel in Paris Tue, 7-Oct-2008 "Our house, in the middle of the street," played over again and again while the hundreds and hundreds of people watched Chanel's new collection unfold. Karl Lagerfeld of course couldn't just have one house so he managed to bring Rue Cambon to the gorgeous Grand Palais. A replicated facade of the storied Chanel building at number 31 even containing a street runway, stood tall.
The perfect way to describe the show was Lagerfeld at his extreme top of his game. Lagerfeld said, "The theme was inspired by a grayish portrait by Marie Laurencin, who painted Coco Chanel in the twenties." And many of the Chanel fans are ever so thankful for the painter. From head to toe details were important. Models wore headdresses while walking down the "street" and feathered sandals that oddly went along with the sophisticated looks.
There was variation in every piece. Tweed jackets ranged from long, short, and even shorter. Some were cropped, while some were full of volume. Dresses came through sophisticated with class as well as short, sexy knit pieces. Sportswear was even touched on with some fit black pants. Each ensemble was as ornamented as it could be with beading, bold cuts and glamorous chunky chains fastened with a brooch.
Jewelry and accessories were large flower necklaces and shiny medallions, and everything was glitter. As the night came to a close, evening gowns dominated the runway to create a much laid back feel and almost a certain peace. With long, silhouette skirtsuits with cropped boleros, a pink pleated dress, and a gray hazy georgette flowing dress, it was the closest escape from the real world one could get.
